Resources for Addressing a Key Topic in Internet Ethics
If you were unable to join us for our recent Digital Dignity Day event, or would like to revisit any of the presentations from that day, you can now access the recordings of all six of the sessions.
The event was part of the Markkula Center’s work in the international project “New Humanism in the time of Neurosciences and Artificial Intelligence” (NHNAI).
While all of the panels were outstanding, I would particularly highlight Prof. Shannon Vallor’s keynote presentation, titled “De-Coding Our Humanity: Dignity and Fullness in the Digital Age.”
(Yours truly was part of the panel titled “Human Dignity Framing,” organized and moderated by Subramaniam Vincent, who directs the center’s Journalism and Media Ethics program.)
In conjunction with the day’s conversations, the center also compiled a collection of concise articles by various staff members as well as faculty scholars from multiple departments across Santa Clara University: We hope that those readings, as well as the recordings, will serve as resources for any courses within which the concept of “digital dignity” might resonate.
On May 10th, the newly elected Pope Leo XIV held his first formal audience, during which he explained that he had chosen his name in part because Pope Leo XIII had addressed “the context of the first great industrial revolution”; he also referenced, specifically, “developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defence of human dignity, justice and labour.”
As the AI revolution continues, the upholding and protection of dignity in the digital realm will continue to be a focus of our work at the ethics center.
